Want to Talk?A colourful illustration of a cityscape at night features a blue background with yellow stars. The word “London” is displayed in a green speech bubble above the prominent word “nightline,” spelled in large, light purple letters. The cityscape is composed of miniature 3D paper buildings, houses, and landmarks, including the London Eye and Big Ben, all in shades of blue, purple, and pink. Small speech bubbles float above the scene, and a smartphone illustration appears in the bottom right corner. The design has a whimsical and playful tone.
A stylised illustration of a laptop made entirely of paper in shades of light purple and blue. The laptop screen displays two speech bubbles, one large and green, and the others smaller and purple, against a deep blue background. The keyboard consists of blue rectangles representing keys, and the laptop appears to be tilted at an angle, giving it a 3D effect. The design has a playful and handcrafted feel.

An anonymous listening and information service run by students, for students in London universities.

You can talk to a trained volunteer about anything – big or small – in complete confidence. We won’t judge you or tell you how to run your life: we’ll simply listen to whatever’s on your mind.

All our volunteers are students themselves, who have undergone extensive training and who understand that university life in London isn’t always plain sailing.

All calls and instant messages are completely anonymous, and phone numbers are not visible on our system. You don’t have to tell us your name or university. Everything that is said is kept confidential within Nightline and individual themes are never passed on to universities.

Our History

London Nightline was set up by Imperial College students in 1971, after the deaths of two students by suicide. Students there felt that their peers’ needs were not being met and wanted to do something to support each other.

Inspired by the creation of Essex Nightline the year before, London Nightline began as a telephone listening service. More than 50 years later this is still a fundamental part of the service, although we also hear from students through instant messaging, email and Skype.

We are the largest of 30 Nightlines across the United Kingdom and together have a reach of 1.3 million students.
