What is Nightline volunteer training like?

October 28, 2024

A diverse group of people, mostly young adults, are seated in rows of chairs in a small lecture hall. They are focused on something in front of them, perhaps a screen or a speaker.

Another round of training complete and a wonderful new cohort of volunteers settling into our team! Training is always an exciting time of year, getting to meet the newest group of students who’ve chosen to dedicate their time and energy to supporting the mental health of their peers.

After over 50 years of training volunteers and developing our practices, we’re confident in the fact that every new volunteer finishes our training cycle feeling confident and empowered to answer the phone no matter what’s going to come up in the conversation. By focusing on active listening skills, non-directivity, and creating a foundation of empathy, we can break down stigma and open up the conversation around taboo topics like suicide.

So what did our trainees think?

“I thought the training was really well managed and paced”

“Volunteering with Nightline I have always felt incredibly well supported not only by the Coordinator and welfare officer but also by the other volunteers. The training was and continues to be comprehensive meaning I felt confident that I could deal with any situation that came up, and if not would know who to contact.”

“Thank you so much for providing the training – I enjoyed it a lot and am looking forward to my first few shifts!”
