Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine and I am grateful for the opportunity to achieve it by being in London this semester. Studying abroad challenges students to discover more about themselves and be a global citizen.
The first few days abroad were a whirlwind of emotions and experiences as I was filled with excitement and nerves when I got off the plane at Heathrow. My first setback was learning how to navigate the airport as I was told to go “-1 floor down”. It took a moment for me to process what I heard, as I never heard “-1” describe going down one floor! But it all worked out in the end as I made it to my group before we had to catch our bus for the next adventure.
Even with minor setbacks and a transition in vocabulary, studying in London is an incredible experience. I learn to trust myself and abilities more and more eachday. Whether it is navigating the bus delays, exploring a new part of the city, or planning a weekend getaway, each moment sparks excitement.
Having a sense of community and people to depend on made my transition a lot more manageable. My university here in London provides me with a multitude of opportunities and resources that help me balance academics with wellbeing and travel. Being in a new city, let alone country, can feel daunting and lonely. Not knowing the space you are in, and the cultural norms makes you feel the pressure of being an outcast even more. Having a safe space where I can ask questions, share stories, or get some fantastic food recommendations, makes studying abroad a more enjoyable experience and reminds me that I am not alone in the busy city of London.
